Is this Andy Caffrey's first Congressional campaign ad?

I'm wondering if I just uploaded my first campaign ad... or anti-ad. It is now my first campaign video.

A couple of weeks ago, on a radio talk show, a neighbor of mine and the talk show host started talking about my campaign. This was brought to my attention and I decided I wanted to upload it. To do that I had to turn the audio into a video, so I decided to make my first slideshow in iPhoto using my friend Rick Childs' recent photos of me.

Thus it is now a campaign video.

A couple of corrections of their comments.

I am a Green politics person. I ran campaigns going back to the Citizens Party from 1980 -1982. The Citizens party was the first U.S. Green Party and was recognized by the European Green parties as such with a personal presentation at one of our conventions.

Since the formation of the specifically-named Green Movement in the U.S. in 1985, I have been on-and-off involved and registered Green since the first meeting of the East Bay Green Alliance. I was also very involved with the movement (and debated Murray Bookchin three times about Earth First!) at the first Green Movement convention in Amherst, MA in 1987.

Anna is right when she phrased her comment that I was running for the Green Party. Literally, that is correct but specifically it is not.

In this 2010 election I am a Green running to get elected by winning in the Democratic Primary. I'm sort of the anti-Arlen Spector who is a Republican Senator now running in the Democratic Party.

However, I am not and never will be a Democrat.

Once elected, from the inside of Congress, I will do everything I can to change electoral law to break down as many barriers to third party participation in governing as I can organize. I will get arrested demonstrating for third party access.

So, yes, in the broader sense I am definitely running for the advancement of the Green Party.

I would like to hear from you folks if I should snip out Anna's comments about Arnold. I have mixed feelings about it.

The Day The Oceans Boiled part 2

Astonishing as it might sound, there have been times in the past when global air temperatures increased 20 degrees C in one human lifetime.

The last glaciation cycle of the Ice Age began 120,000 years ago with a Madhouse Century of seventy feet in sea level changes. The conditions then are quite similar to what they are now.

So there is nothing gradual about the climate crisis. There is no "global warming" even on a human time scale.

The Day The Oceans Boiled part 1

If you have kids, I hope you will watch this. It could be the most important video I've ever seen.

Fifty-five million years ago there was a massive pulse of carbon released by the natural carbon sinks of the planet that caused an 8 degree C global air temperature jump.

That temperature increase provoked another massive one not long after because the higher temperatures warmed the oceans which dry out the forests.

Human carbon releases are causing the same phenomenon right now: warm the oceans, increase the length of the Amazon dry season, dry out the rainforest and it all burns at once causing a massive jump in CO2 levels, and maybe even a runaway greenhouse effect.

If this video doesn't make you cry, I don't now what will.

So if you care about your kids, or about any of the world's forests, bring climate crisis organizing into your lifestyle.

Please, before it's too late.

1987 Grand Canyon Round River Rendezvous & Uranium Mine Action

This is the one video clip that probably means the most to me, and I didn't shoot it. I did record audio of the Sagebrush Patriots Rally that year and release a 96-minute cassette of that music a year later, "Battle Cries From The North Rim."

But I think these four clips were a big inspiration for me to go to video in 1988. Hollenhorst liked us, and the four clips almost make a single "How to take over a uranium mine" how-to video. And I thought that was pretty cool!

Later, I thought, people 180-feet up in redwoods, might make inspiring video.

And I even got used in several places, raising a fist among the marchers wearing a blue monkeywrench bomber long sleeve t-shirt that "we" gave to Don Hodel at Hetch Hetchy Damn a few months later when we couldn't fiind any clean ones to give to him and Dianne Feinstein.

And then Michelle Miller, Janaka (who would come back two years later with Bodhi Seed as Emu and tour Turtle Island as The Wallys) and I sing Bill Oliver's song "Holes" with Bill and Glen Waldeck, a shot they used over and over!

I met John Hollenhorst at the rendezvous, and hung out with him quit a bit, pointing him to good interviews, and straightening him out on things like biocentrism, Deep Ecology, Miss Ann Thropy's "Hooray AIDS!" letter, "No Compromise," etc.

So after the RRR I contacted the southern Utah news stations, who put me in touch with copying services, and $80 later I had these four clips.

Unfortunately those tapes were destroyed in the 1991 Oakland Firestorm. But I had made a copy as part of a compilation to show in the reception area at a Portland EF! event, and that copy was part of the tapes I rescued from the fire.

This and over 300 hours of similarly invaluable video of Earth First! culture that I have shot and collected since 1985 is now very aged and at risk of becoming unplayable. This is the single greatest archive of its kind in the world. In fact, there is nothing at all like it in the world.

Most of it is now over twenty years old on tapes that deteriorate at fifteen years. I am trying to professionally digitize it all. If you would like to help me with that effort, please let me know. If you can help with a contribution of money or expertise, you can also reach me at

Todd Rundgren on Letterman 12/22/08 Strike While The Iron Is Hot

Todd Rundgren has just released his best album in thirty years: "Arena."

It seems to have two thrusts, a tribute musically to the guitar rock of the seventies like Robin Trower, Jeff Beck and AC/DC.

Lyrically, it's all about getting off yer butt RIGHT NOW, as it is in this AC/DC homage which he played on Letterman, "Strike (While The Iron Is Hot)."

So to all of you Obama workers who just kicked Republican butt, it's not time to relaxe and just let our man save the world with the other Federal bureaucrats.

We will have to be out there relentlessly, all the time, during the next four-to-eight years to assure that Obama's and Congress's energy and focus is maintained in the right areas: e.g. Yes to Conservation, Public Transportation, and Smart Building, and No to Nukes, any Oil Drilling anywhere, and "Clean Coal" (sic).

OK? So Todd's right, We must keep striking while the iron is hot! Letterman obviously gets it.

And if they come near you, go check out Todd's triple guitar threat quintet with Prairie Prince, drummer of The Tubes. You won't regret it. Todd, like Frank Zappa, is one of those amazing musicians you'll be really glad you saw while he passed through.

To Todd fans, it's his best since "Oops! Wrong Planet" in 1978. If you love "Oops!" you'll love "Arena."

"Arena" Gaiabilly rating: 5 Stars (My 2008 Album of the Year).

Are you Ready to Rumble?

I play this kind of music on my two music radio shows "Aural Sculpture" (Mind Movie Music) and "Rockin' In The Tree World" (the world's only Gaiabilly music show) alternating them every two weeks at http://www.kmud.org .

The shows are late, late, late every other Friday nights, so late that they are actually on Saturdays from 2-5 AM. You can also listen to them for two weeks after each show if you go to the KMUD Audio Archive and look up "Aural Sculpture."

Earth First! class: How To Sink Whaling Ships (+ 2 poems)

On one hand, this could really be a film of a real class on how to sink whaling ships, and this guy could really be someone who has sunk whaling and drift net ships. On the other hand, this guy could be a mad Cuban poet & performance artist I met at a Rendezvous, using a script handed to me by a disgruntled former Eco-warrior of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society–a video mock-up to spur interest in the development of a feature film around a serial sinker.

I can tell you that all of the information about the International Whaling Commission and what nations are whaling using which excuses, is fourteen years out of date. But all of the technical whaling information is completely accurate.

You can find a video elsewhere in my myspace video archive that I shot of this guy reciting his poetry at this same event, the 1994 Earth First! Round River Rendezvous in the Katuah Bioregion of Appalachian Tennessee and North Carolina.

And yes, of course I advocate that people sink illegal whaling and driftnetting ships. At least until the world's governments take over that responsibility. All of the world's oceans and fisheries are on the brink of collapse RIGHT NOW and have been in rapid decline for forty freakin' years!

So all hands on deck! But get off before the ship goes down!

This is a perfect example of a precious tape deteriorating after almost fifteen years. I urgently want to professionally preserve this and hundreds of hours of other master tapes of 1980s and 1990s Earth First! culture. No one else anywhere on Earth has videos like this.

And be sure to check out "Whale Wars," the Animal Planet TV series documenting the Sea Shepherd Society today. After watching the first year of the mini-series, you can see how screwing up when doing these deadly serious activities can easily blow everything one is trying to achieve and kill people.

If you plan to do anything like this, please maintain personal discipline and focus, and work always with your most astute wits and a profound sense of responsibility and loyalty to your cohorts and their security and well being. I know people who have died because others were simply lame, too laid back, too drunk or stoned and/or completely unprepared for the consequences of their actions. As we say in the Boy Scouts, Be Prepared! This isn't a game, it's a life commitment.

The Cuban Sinker's T-shirt says (I think)

Live Long
Live Well
Then Die

I've tagged onto both ends of this class two anecdotal ocean biospheric defense poetry videos, including a performance of this course as a poem.

You can find other video elsewhere in my myspace video archive that I shot of this guy reciting his poetry and teaching a class on How To Sink A Whaling Ship.

If you can help me with a contribution of money and/or technical expertise, you can contact me via this myspace site or send mail to me at

If you choose to post this video at your web site, I would sure love a link to it. That way I can let you know when I replace this with a better version.

Dana Lyons, Glen Waldeck, Bill Oliver-1989 Jemez, NM RRR: Animal

GRRRR!!! This was from my first attempt to videotape a Round River Rendezvous. Two years earlier I had recorded the Sagebrush Patriots Rally onto cassette at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. I edited thirteen hours down to about 96 minutes and released it as the cassette album, "Battle Cries From The North Rim" in 1988.

So here are three of the tribe's favorites. That's Tim Coleman on stage with them, up there in the pink shirt. Dana Lyons, Glen Waldeck & Bill Oliver had recently toured Alaska with an Earth First! road show. So their comradery and tomfoolery was at a feverish pitch this Fourth of July weekend in 1989 in the anciient caldera that is the Jemez Mountians of northern New Mexico.

Lots of our friends are out in the crowd dancing, like Jean Crawford, Dave Parks, Dale Turner? of the EF! Journal, Phil Knight, Joanne Dittersdorf, Beth Fries, Bikini, Karen Wood, Val Wade, David Cross...

Can you name anybody else? I recognize more, but the names escape me.

After videotaping two days of music and antics like those on display in this video of "Animal," I was hooked on capturing EF! in all its flavors, which I did pretty much non-stop until I lost my camcorder in 1994 and became homeless from 1993-1998.

5-In These Ancient Trees by Bill Oliver & Glen Waldeck, Jemez, NM 1989 RRR

Bill Oliver at http://www.mrhabitat.net

Mr. Habitat Bill Oliver and his side-kick Glen Waldeck were two of the first activist musicians to entertain the Earth First! troops at the Round River Rendezvous beginning in the early 1980s. They are definers of the Gaiabilly genre and were two of the first to capture our culture–our history (Bugis), attitudes (Wrecking Ball, Ancient Trees), our reckless humor (Wrecking Ball)–in songs specific to our eco-warrior lives. They reflect in song our heroic adventures and what we see and respond to as critters immersed in this evolving and aching real world that provoke our activist responses (Exxon song).

Here are five songs from a seventeen-song compilation video I made over Labor Day weekend in 1993 during the month before I became homeless for five years. "Stumped! Songs of Sanity and Survival" was the second of two Bill & Glen video compilations I made in that month–along with three other activist videos (!)–compiled from several movement gigs by them between 1988 and 1990. I suppose you could consider this the outtakes from the first video, "Woodpecker Rebellion," but really they were all too good to be left out, so it's more like the two videos together were one four-hour collection.

Three summers of Bill & Glen caught during my first three years Kerouacing around Turtle Island with a camcorder, a couple of extension cables, a microphone, and a Radio Shack desktop mic stand I had bought to do Earth First! and Green Politics radio work at KPFA in Berkeley in 1985. In my photo album there's a photo of me doing that for the first time at a CA Dept. of Forestry meeting in Sacramento.

One of the secrets of the success of my lowbagger videos is that I got good sound. For gigs like these I used the small mic stand and 25-foot extension cable to mic the sound right out f the PA. But mostly, I used the microphone like a conductor's wand to follow or gather sound while simultaneously my eyes sucked most of my attention into capturing the video reality. Or realities: my left eye was scanning the world for what to shoot and my right was glued to a one-inch black & white TV viewfinder to design & create the shoot. Talk about feeling like a cyborg! And I hate TV!

Unfortunately most of the rest of this video has deteriorated due to twenty years of aging and being shleped around with me through firestorms, road show touring, evictions, FBI attacks, and five years of homelessness.

If you would like to help me preserve these recordings please send a contribution to me at

Bill Oliver & Glen Waldeck 89 Jemez RRR: In These Ancient Trees

Bill asked me to make a music video for him of this song back at Breitenbush, OR in 1988. Due to circumstances beyond my control...

We did kinda go off in the woods with Todd Samusson and do a shoot right before his set. So maybe some day I'll surprise him with it.

It is a really beautiful song. That's Dana Lyons on stage with them, as the three had just finished an Earth First! road show of Alaska.

Four year later, a month before I became homeless for five years, I finished editing six or so Earth First! videos–mostly of Dana Lyons, Bill & Glen, and Judi Bari–four of which were never released.

These closing credits are from Stumped!, the second compilation of Bill Oliver & Glen Waldeck, and this clip comes from a copy of that video.

John Trudell 1989 Mateel CC benefit for Headwaters Forest

I think it was in March 1989 when John Trudell performed this searing performance at the Mateel Community Center in a benefit show with Dana Lyons and Darryl Cherney & Ecotage for Headwaters Forest.

This is half of his show. Most of the rest of my videotape has deteriorated with age. I am trying to raise money, expertise and technological support to preserve over 300 hours of my S-VHS masters of Earth First! culture, Gaiabilly and Warrior Poetry going back to the 1980s. This is the most comprehensive archive of Earth First! in the world and it is beginning to lose out to time.

If you would like to see these videos preserved digitally for future generations, please drop me a note about how you can help.

The songs are

Rich Man's War
God Help and Breed You All
Shaman (Make A Chant)
Rockin' The Rez
Grafitti Man

Unfortunately, the audio board tape I recorded was destroyed in the Oakland firestorm in 1991. But the camera audio here is pretty good, especially if you turn it up!
